 Take A Tour Of Payson

For 126 continuous years Payson, Arizona has been celebrating the history and tradition of Pro-Rodeo.  It is still held the third weekend in August and according to the PRCA, which sanctions the event it is considered the country's Best Small Rodeo.  We invite you to come and experience the exhilaration of rodeo, the sport of the Old West! Some of the world’s greatest professional cowboys and cowgirls will keep you on the edge of your seat, for over two hours. They'll compete for cash and prizes totaling in excess of more than $50,000 in prize money. Fearless bull riders, steer wrestlers, gorgeous bronc riders, specialty acts, and colorful clowns will keep you entertained and shouting for more.  Purchase tickets online - click here.

Organizers of the first Payson Rodeo were Abraham Henson Meadows; know later as “Arizona Charlie” Meadows (1860-1962), who moved to the Rim Country with his parents from California in 1877 and young John Collins Chilson (1867-1924) who also moved to this area from California in 1879.  The word passed along from ranch to ranch and on the third weekend of August in 1884, cowboys participated in the first Payson Rodeo.  This first rodeo was held in Mid-Town Pasture, a little southwest of the intersection of Highway 87 and old Main, now the site of Sawmill Crossing.    That was over 125 years ago and the World’s Oldest Continuous rodeo has never missed a year since.

Over the years  Payson’s rodeo has experienced notoriety and fame.  In fact after last year’s 125th celebration, True West Magazine named Payson’s Rodeo as the “Best Small Town PRCA Rodeo” in the Country.   We would like to invite you to come and experience the western heritage that has made the Payson rodeo what it is today.     To read the best of the story click here.
